Natalie Tabiah - Oriental dance

Classical dance Raqs Sharqi ("Dance of the East" in Arabic), also known as belly dance, oriental, or arabesque, is a scenic, aristocratic dance. It is based on the elements of the ancient dances of the Middle Eastern countries, enriched with elements of classical western choreography such as ballet, and accompanied by classical oriental music with complex rhythmic patterns. Dancers may use a shawl and finger cymbals as accessories.

Each region has its own distinct style. The most popular is Egyptian style - graceful, mannered, restrained. Percussion rhythm is less important than complex melodies. Performed on the bare forefoot and incorporates structured arm positions.

Lebanese style is more expressive with active hip and diaphragm movements. Dancers perform in high-heels and use elements of "floorwork".

Turkish style is sensual, passionate, dynamic. A lot of "floorwork" and very open dresses.

Balkan style blends oriental and gypsy dance. Very energetic, movements are repetitive, based on shimmies and pushing hips and shoulders. Shimmies are predominantly shaking the lower abdomen. Steps are small and hand movement is simplistic.

Natalie Tabiah - Children

We offer oriental dance classes for girls age 6 and up!

Oriental dances for girls

Oriental dance for children differ from sensual belly dancing for adults.
For girls, it's a beautiful oriental fairy tale where they can be princesses, fairies, mermaids, phoenix, and other fairy-tale characters depending on the theme of the production. Accessories actively used include wings, assaya sticks, fans, shawls (for more details on dancing with accessories, see Dance styles and directions).
Children’s classes are less formal and incorporate playful activities in the lesson. Some movements that are used in adult dances are excluded, e.g. shimmies. The focus is on learning a sense of rhythm and how to move, developing strength and flexibility, and theatrics.
